Training

As generative AI began disrupting industries, Bloomberg took a bold, early step to prepare its newsroom. In partnership with SOPHIA, the company launched one of the first internal training programs in the media sector to equip journalists and anchors with the skills to understand, critique, and experiment with AI in their reporting workflows.

Defining the Problem

In early 2023, as generative AI tools like ChatGPT captured global attention, Bloomberg recognised both the opportunity and the uncertainty they posed for journalism.

Editors and anchors needed more than just curiosity; they needed clarity: what was generative AI, how did it work, and how might it disrupt news production, credibility, and editorial ethics?

At the time, few organisations had internal AI literacy programs, and Bloomberg aimed to lead rather than follow.

Our Solutions

SOPHIA designed a 6-week digital training program to demystify generative AI for Bloomberg’s newsroom.
The course included:

* Foundations of GenAI and how large language models operate

* Use cases for content creation, research, and story structuring

* Global regulatory trends and journalistic ethics

* Risk management: hallucinations, misinformation, bias and IP concerns

* Tool walkthroughs and interactive examples

* First-hand experiences from Bloomberg journalists experimenting with GenAI

Delivered via Bloomberg’s internal platform, the program was flexible, high-impact, and designed for immediate newsroom relevance.

Impact

Bloomberg became one of the first global media organisations to offer a structured GenAI training program to its editorial staff.

The initiative sparked early adoption, critical debate, and cross-team collaboration, positioning the company at the forefront of AI-informed journalism.

Participants gained the vocabulary, scepticism, and confidence to engage with GenAI tools thoughtfully. Internal testimonials helped anchor the content in real newsroom challenges and created momentum for innovation.
